I believe there should be a balance between school and the outside life...
Basketball
As a team captain of West High School's softmore girls basketball team, and a starting player of the junior varsity team, I've been playing basketball since I could walk. I find basketball a very fun and productive way to spend time out of school. Sports help me stay healthy and busy everday of my life. Basketball has always helped me in numerous ways. When I feel sad, lonely, or neglected, I play ball and use it as a way of shelter. I have a connection with the game of basketball, that no one and nothing can replace. People say it's just a game, but I think differently...

Reflection
My basketball season was full of hard work, leadership, sweat and victory. I didn't include defeat as a part of my list, because we were taught that were champions no matter what the score board showed. This season has helped me realize I really want to continue with basketball for more than just my high school years. I realized how much I love the game of basketball. Nothing could stop me from playing the game that I absolutely love.
I learned so much from playing basketball. I became dedicated, tough and fearless on and off the court. I have the utmost respect for all my coaches. They put in countless hours of time and money for our basketball teams at West High. They would stay after practice for 2 or maybe 3 hours , and would help us me with weaknesses or struggles I had. My coaches were absolutely dedicated to us as we were them.
A special thanks to my basketball coaches:

Softball
I decided to try softball my sophomore year, and it was a great experience. Softball helped me keep my mind open to many things and helped me learn new things. I think it's made me a better athlete and helped me look at the game of basketball in a new perspective. Softball is the only other sport I took seriously besides basketball, so it was different trying to prepare myself for a game.
Although I don't love the sport, I came to love my softball team. We all became close teammates and just had fun out on the softball field. Everyone was really friendly and supportive of one another. I'm glad our coaches gave us a great season, and am very thankful they took the time to make us better athletes.

Always make time for your family...
Family Time
My family means more to me than anything else. They've helped me through the hard times and kept me smiling through everything. Now that I go to AMES, I live with my grandparents and visit my family on the weekends. This experience has really changed me for the better. I cherish the little amount of time I have with them on the weekends.
AMES Memory
My first day of school was definitely one to remember. As a new student at AMES, I was devastated when it came to the thought of making new friends. I had already been to 2 different schools previously and AMES would be my third school of my high school career. I walked in through the front doors with my brother and was overcome with vulnerability. The bell rang and I couldn't figure out which way to go. Perhaps my facial expression was obvious, because a fellow student stopped and helped me. She continued to walk me to every class after that and introduced me to the many friends that I have now. Everyone was very warm and welcoming. I felt more at home at AMES then any of the previous schools I attended. Also, the faculty knew most of the students by their name, so when they didn't recognize me, they made sure I felt comfortable during class. It was an experience I would never forget, and would like to thank everyone at AMES for their warm welcome to my brother and I.
